How can I prove this? I went from weighing 245 pounds to weighing 165 pounds by following a strict plant-based diet.

Not only did I lose 1/3 of my body weight, I’ve also been able to keep the weight off!

Like many of you, I tried several diets before I heard about a plant-based diet. So when I heard about the benefits offered by a plant-based diet, I was skeptical. However, on this side of losing 80 pounds, and keeping it off, I can honestly tell you that this diet is life-changing!

What is a plant-based diet?
A plant-based diet is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a diet focused on eating fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains, and legumes. It cuts out meat and dairy products entirely.

The goal is to lower your intake of fatty, high-calorie foods so you can lose weight and feel happier and healthier. Many people believe we have to have milk and meat in our diet to survive. The truth is that we don’t.

Why is it better than other diets?
A plant-based diet is simple, safe, and effective. Not only will it help you to lose weight and feel great, it can also help lessen the symptoms of diabetes, decrease pain from inflammatory conditions, and boost your brain health!

Plus, maintaining your weight after you lose your extra pounds is relatively easy!

Is a plant-based diet the same as being vegan?
Yes and no.  Veganism is much more of a philosophy than it is a simple dietary choice. People who choose a vegan lifestyle do it because of their beliefs about how creatures are treated in the gathering of animal products. They abstain from consuming these products as a part of an ethical choice they’ve made.
How will a plant-based diet help me lose weight?
First, you’ll start to lose weight as soon as you cut sugar out of your diet. Second, you’ll feel better as you lower your calorie intake and focus on giving your body just what it needs. Third, you’ll begin to see how your poor dietary choices were actually harming your body over time.

With a plant-based diet, you have the potential to lose weight and feel better than you have in years!

What can I eat on a plant-based diet?
The short answer: Anything that’s not derived from animal products.

However, not all plant-based foods are created equal.

Your goal is to find the right balance of fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, and nuts that works for you.

In this way, you can maximize the amount of weight you lose while also boosting your energy levels and gaining mental clarity.

Is a plant-based diet effective?
Absolutely! You can lose weight quickly and easily. Plus, you’ll lower your risk for certain types of cancer and boost your brainpower and metabolism!
Where Do I Get Protein On A Plant-Based Diet?
Many plant-based foods can actually be a great source of protein!

Nuts, grains, and legumes are especially helpful when you’re trying to get the protein you need.

The idea that we have to eat meat products to get protein is a myth.

Can I Still Eat Some Meat and Dairy Products?
I wouldn’t recommend it for at least the first 30 days you’re on this diet. I believe that discipline is an extremely important part of any diet and practicing specific behaviors over and over again helps us develop discipline.

The risk in reintroducing meat and dairy products too early is that you’ll slip back into old patterns of eating before you experience the full benefits of the plant-based diet.

How long does it take to start seeing results?
Results will vary from person to person. Some people may lose 10 pounds in the first 30 days, others may only lose 5.

I’ve also heard of people losing 14 pounds in 14 days. It really just depends on the nature of your current diet and your dedication to plant-based eating.

Do Doctors Recommend A Plant-Based Diet?
Yes, many doctors are supporters of plant-based nutrition. However, I recommend checking with your own personal physician before making any major changes to your diet.

With that being said, some of the best resources I’ve come across have been written by Dr. Neil Barnard and other medical professionals.

Is A Plant-Based Diet the Same As Being Vegetarian?
Not exactly. Though they are extremely similar in many ways.

Both diets stress eating vegetables, fruits, nuts, grains, and legumes. Both diets also abstain from meat.

However, there are forms of vegetarian diets which allow the dieter to eat dairy products and/or eggs. Whereas, with a plant-based diet, the goal is to exclude these foods along with meat.

Isn't Eating Healthy More Expensive?
Let’s start with a long term perspective. If you continue to eat unhealthy food over an extended period of time, you will continue to gain more weight. This will lead to obesity-related health issues, which will cost more money to treat until they eventually take your life.

In the short-term, it honestly depends a lot on your personal eating habits and food choices. Personally, I didn’t see a large increase in my grocery costs.  And, in the end, the results I got on this diet were more than worth spending a few extra dollars at the grocery store!
