Isn't eating healthy more expensive?
Following a plant-based diet doesn’t have to break the bank…
There are a few different ways to approach this subject.
Let’s start with a long-term perspective. If you continue to eat unhealthy food over an extended period of time, you will continue to gain more weight. This will lead to obesity-related health issues, which will cost more money to treat until they eventually take your life.
Does that sound extreme? It isn’t.
If you think about it, it’s really just the logical conclusion of your current actions (if you’re struggle with unhealthy eating habits). And before you see me as a holier-than-thou, judgmental guy on his high horse, please know that there’s no judgment here whatsoever.
I’ve been there and done that. I’ve had days where I ate and drank thousands of extra calories. That’s how I ended up over 70 pounds overweight.
So, no, I’m not in a position to judge anyone.
OK, with that settled, let’s look at this question from a short-term perspective.
I would say eating healthy can be more expensive, but that isn’t necessarily the case. It depends a lot on your personal eating habits and food choices.
Think about it this way: If you were to eat out at fast food restaurants 3 times a day and pay between $5.00 and $7.00 a meal, you’d be paying $15.00 to $21.00 for food that day, right?
On the flip side, you could buy a few day’s worth of healthy groceries for a single person on a plant-based diet for that same $21.00.
So, even from a short-term perspective eating healthy doesn’t necessarily have to be more expensive.
Now consider this:
- If you start making healthier food choices today and continue into the future, you’ll live a happier, healthier life.
- Your weight will go down and stay down.
- You’ll avoid obesity-related health conditions.
- Your heart will be under less stress, and it’s very likely that you will live longer.
I’ll leave it up to you to count the cost.
For most of us, I think the best solution is to eat healthier (regardless of the cost) so we can live longer, happier, and more fulfilled lives with the people we love and avoid losing out on life’s joys simply to entertain our taste buds.
