Is following a plant-based diet the same as being vegan?
How a plant-based diet compares to veganism…
Yes and no. I think of myself as a kind of vegan impostor. I spent some time behind the vegan lines and learned what I could about eating healthier while I was there, but there’s much more to being vegan than just the foods they eat (or don’t eat).
You see, veganism is much more of a philosophy than it is a simple dietary choice. People who choose a vegan lifestyle do it because of their beliefs about how creatures are treated in the gathering of animal products. They abstain from consuming these products as a part of an ethical choice they’ve made.
While I certainly don’t like every aspect of how animals are treated in our food harvesting processes, I’m not necessarily ready to adopt those same convictions. The nice thing is, regardless of your belief system, you can still take advantage of the health benefits of a plant-based/vegan diet.
A plant-based diet simply recognizes the value of how vegans approach nutrition. It promotes a way of eating that is low in calories and is perfect for losing weight and feeling great! It gets us back to eating the foods our bodies most easily digest, and it focuses on eating foods for their nutritional value- not how much they entertain our taste buds.
A plant-based diet allows you to make food choices without any philosophical strings attached.
- You don’t have to hate the meat and dairy industries (although that choice is obviously up to you).
- You don’t have to view animals as being as valuable as people (but you can do that too).
- You just have to be willing to forego some of your favorite foods for a time until you reach your ideal weight and begin looking and feeling better than you have in years!
At that point, you may decide that vegans are on to something and delve deeper into their philosophy. You may even get to the point where you decide to let animal products be a thing of your past. My main concern isn’t your ethical choice, it’s your health and your happiness!
I want to share the benefits I’ve discovered from a plant-based diet with you. And I want to help you see how a vegan-style diet can help you reach your ideal weight.
