Is a plant-based diet safe for kids?
Give your kids the gift of better health…
Absolutely!
There’s no reason your whole family couldn’t benefit from a plant-based diet. In fact, if other members of your household are struggling with their weight as well, this could be a huge help to them.
However, I would suggest you either invite or recommend they join you, as forcing this diet on them could cause unnecessary stress in your home.
You might want to begin by introducing a couple of meat and dairy-free meals a week, just to see how they go over.
If everyone seems to enjoy them, you can keep it going. If there’s some tension, you may have to take a different approach.
Another great way to introduce plant-based eating is to start by switching out sugary snacks with healthier ones. Keep fruit and nuts on-hand to replace snack cakes and potato chips. Even a small step like this can drastically reduce the number of calories your kids take in.
You can also help them out by refusing to keep soda in your home. Let them know you’re only going to be drinking water and fruit juice for a while. I recommend buying a zero-calorie drink mix to go with the water, to add some flavor. This will help with the transition.
Think about it, just by making these changes in the way your kids snack and in what they drink, you are literally cutting thousands of calories out of their diet every week. If that doesn’t get you a Parent Of The Year Award, I don’t know what will…
Now, there are probably some of you who have children who have been labeled “obese” by their doctor at an early age. You’re not alone. In fact, the statistics are pretty staggering.
According to the CDC (https://www.cdc.gov/healthyschools/obesity/index.htm), “Data from 2015–2016 show that nearly 1 in 5 school-age children and young people aged 6 to 19 years in the United States has obesity.”
If your child falls into that category, then introducing a plant-based diet could be a life-saving change for them!
Will it be easy? Not at all, but major changes rarely are.
Will it be worth it to see them grow happier and healthier? Definitely!
If you’re taking this course of action, again, I recommend a slow transition over to the plant-based diet.
I also suggest making the change as a family so no one feels like they’re being singled out. That way you’re all getting healthier together. You can challenge and encourage each other, and you can also celebrate reaching milestones together!
