Do doctors recommend following a plant-based diet?

Many doctors are huge supporters of plant-based eating.

However, as a disclaimer, let me begin by saying that you should consult your personal physician before making any major changes to your diet and/or lifestyle. With that being said, it is very likely your doctor will approve of the health benefits that come from following a plant-based diet.

What are some of the potential benefits?

The biggest one, and probably the most obvious, is losing weight. The great thing about this benefit is the ripple effect of other benefits that follow.

When you lose weight, your body becomes lighter, which means that your heart doesn’t have to work as hard to keep you going. Your lungs benefit in the same way, and you’ll find that you don’t have to stop as much to catch your breath. You’ll also find that your good cholesterol goes up while your bad cholesterol goes down. This is something every doctor likes to see!

Increased energy is another benefit. If, like me, you’ve started to wonder if your metabolism died in your 20’s, you’ll be excited to know that losing weight on a plant-based diet seems to bring it back to life again! You may also experience a decrease in depression. (I certainly have!)

Increased mental clarity is another benefit.

Losing weight can also help those who suffer from sleep apnea. Imagine how much better your life could be if you were able to get a good night’s sleep!

Another benefit of your increased energy level is the desire to exercise more often. As it becomes easier and more enjoyable, you’ll do it more frequently. And this serves to reinforce your good health and keeps you from gaining your weight back.

It’s an incredibly powerful cycle!

If you have a health condition like diabetes or you’re taking medications, I would recommend talking to your doctor to make sure that you keep everything in balance. However, it’s also important to note that doctors like Neal Barnard, MD with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine actually recommend eating a plant-based diet for people with diabetes, because it’s a great way to regulate blood sugar levels.

In the end, I believe most doctors would cheerlead their patients who are struggling with their weight and wholeheartedly endorse any plan that helps them lose weight , get into shape, and feel better!
